Galesburg Crews Make Quick Work of House Fire
A Galesburg home was damaged by a brief fire early Tuesday evening, that officials say could have been much worse.

Fire crews were called to 657 West First Street around 10 after 5:00 p.m. for a fire that started on the second floor of the one and a half story home, but was extinguished in under 10 minutes according to Fire Battalion Chief Brad Stevenson.

Stevenson tells WGIL that quick response helped keep damage to a minimum.

"Minimal heat and smoke on the first floor, light to moderate smoke on the second floor. Once they got it cleared out they were able to determine there was a small fire in a closet on the west side of the structure. It appeared to be just in some clothing and that."

Stevenson says he's glad the fire didn't last any longer than it did, because Tuesday's oppressive heat could have caused problems for firefighters. As it was, he says the humidity associated with the heat likely helped mitigate the fire itself.

There was no official cause to the fire, and no one was hurt. A woman and four children inside the home were evacuated safely.
