Human Relations Commission Focuses on Community
The Galesburg Human Relations Commission is no more.

City councils members voted Monday night to suspend the regular rules and take a vote about the commission.

The group will now be known as the Community Relations Commission.

Mayor Sal Garza called for the changes to the commission, but says they will maintain core principles.

"Providing a channel if there are allegations of discrimination, that will continue. So the human relations aspect of this is not going away. We're looking at enhancing that opportunity for community members. The second set of course would be working with the neighborhood groups as well, with the neighborhood block parties and neighborhood watch groups."

The commission wants to create a mediation program to help Galesburg neighbors that may have conflicts with one another.

Garza says there are also still vacancies available within the commission.
