GOP Protests Obama/Giannoulias Fundraiser
As the president attended a fundraiser for Illinois' Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate at a Chicago hotel, a small group of people held a quiet protest outside.

About a dozen Republicans, most in their 20s, held signs that questioned the competence of State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias to hold a U.S. Senate seat.

Some signs blamed Giannoulias for poor management of the state's Bright Start college savings program, which lost millions of dollars when the investment manager, Oppenheimer Funds, allocated money that was supposed to be conservatively invested into riskier investments. Bright Start contributors lost $150 million; the treasurer's office was able to recover only $77 million.

Kate Loomis from Arlington Heights was downtown for the protest. "We're protesting [President Barack] Obama and Giannoulias and Obama's support for Giannoulias," Loomis said before noting the trouble with Bright Start as well as the failure of Giannoulias' family bank. "I don’t support anything he’s done and I don't think he's a positive choice for Illinois."

Giannoulias is facing U.S. Rep. Mark S. Kirk (R-Highland Park) in the Senate race.
