Mattoon Reacts to FutureGen Rejection
Coles County officials were dealt a blow by the U.S. Energy Department's decision to establish a carbon dioxide storage facility in Mattooon instead of the earlier-announced plan to build the FutureGen project, a coal-fired plant with carbon capture in Mattoon.

A spokesman for U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson says the Energy Department's new plan to use the FutureGen site in eastern Illinois purely for carbon dioxide storage is a "far cry" from its once-grand plans to build an experimental power plant.

Senator Dick Durbin says an idle coal-fired power plant in Meredosia, in Morgan County which is owned by Ameren Corp. will be retrofitted with advanced technology to dramatically cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants.

Durbin says this will mean 700 construction jobs and 50 permanent jobs for the Morgan County area.

A first of its kind carbon dioxide transportation pipeline will be built from the Meredosia facility to Mattoon for underground carbon storage. Mattoon and Meredosia are about 150 miles apart.

A center will be established in Mattoon to train workers to build and repower coal-fired power stations using cutting-edge technologies.
