FutureGen Not in Mattoon After All
Mattoon will not be the site of the cutting-edge GutureGen coal-to-energy plant after all.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of Energy will split the project into two sites: A former Ameren plant in Meredosia would be retrofitted, at a cost of $700 million, to burn coal; and the carbon dioxide would be piped to Mattoon, at a construction cost of about $1.2 billion, where the gas would be sequestered underground.

Durbin says this is really a good thing, because it means the project will move forward. He says even people in the Mattoon area were in doubt that the project would ever win Department of Energy approval. He says this new plan would likely mean even more jobs than before, because other companies could pump gas to the sequestration site.

The FutureGen Alliance chose Mattoon in late 2007. Meredosia is about 150 miles west of Mattoon.
