Meredosia Big FutureGen Winner
The Illinois River town of Meredosia stands to be a winner in the decision to change the FutureGen project. The now-closed Ameren plant will be reopened and retrofit to send carbon dioxide -- through a new pipeline -- to be stored at Mattoon. Originally, the entire clean-coal project was to be in Mattoon.

A waitress on a smoke break outside the Main Street Cafe' says the town of 1,100 holds few professional options: "Waitress, and we have gas stations, and we have a grocery store," says 19-year-old Linley Adams, a lifelong resident. A couple of doors down, Mayor Kennie Adams says with layoffs and flood problems, the good news is welcome.

Another elected leader Friday with a representative of U. S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). Brad Zeller, a Morgan County commissioner who chairs the Jacksonville Regional Economic Development Corp, says the Durbin people estimate 500 union jobs for the 30-month construction, adding a project labor agreement will be in place. Zeller says the permanent union jobs in Meredosia could be 50 to 60.

Zeller, whose EDC covers Morgan and Scott Counties, says the plant is within an enterprise zone and eligible for tax breaks.
