IL GOP Criticized Giannoulias Over Rezko Loan
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Republicans are attacking Democratic Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias over a loan issued by his family bank after Giannoulias had left the business.

Republican candidate Mark Kirk said Monday that Giannoulias "misled" voters. Other GOP leaders claim he must have been involved with the loan and owes the public an explanation.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Giannoulias family's Broadway Bank lent nearly $23 million to a real estate company in 2006. One of the company's owners was Antoin "Tony" Rezko, who was then tied up in a corruption probe that ultimately led to his conviction.

The loan was issued after Giannoulias had left the bank to run for Illinois treasurer.

The Giannoulias campaign says Kirk is talking about this to distract voters from real issues.
