Durbin Not Happy With Comments About Giannoulias
A top politician isn't happy with remarks made about the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) isn't happy with an interview given last week by U.S. Rep. Bobby L. Rush (D-Chicago), in which he says he's not sold on State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.

"I'm not sold on him," Rush said in an interview with a Chicago television station. "I don't want just the same old stuff. We want a senator who is willing to work hard on the real issues that this state is confronted with."

Durbin says Rush should accept the candidate for whom voters in the primary cast their ballots.

"Let's be honest about it," Durbin said. "[Rush] was concerned about a lack of [an] African American candidate for the United States Senate. I still think it's a lingering concern of his. I think he's right; we need diversity, but the voters spoke and at this point I hope [Rush] will accept their judgment on this."

Rush is an African-American, Giannoulias is white.

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Roland W. Burris (D-Ill.) has filed a notice in court indicating he will appeal a judge's decision that does not allow new candidates to file to run in the November special election. On that move, Durbin say's it is Burris' right to do so, but believes it's in the best interest of the voters to move forward with the judge's decision.

Federal Judge John Grady has ruled that the ballot for the special election, held the same day as the regular election, will mirror the six-year term ballot. The Democratic, Republican and Green Party primary winners, as well as independents with the required signatures, will be the candidates on both ballots.
