Avon Shows Objection to Consolidation
Avon is worried that the proposed consolidation of the Abingdon, Avon, and Bushnell-Prairie City school districts may offer them few to zero board members on the new district board.

Abingdon Superintendent David Black says this is because of the geographic split between city and rural land in Avon, and the way the recent census defined their population on the city grid.

But Black says under the current system the split is fair, and the proposed school board make-up is equitable.

"If you look at the map, the part of Abingdon School District that was taken into one of those voting blocs that was mostly Avon, was all farmland," Black said. "Really, it was as equitable as it can be. And because there was some people who weren't quite easy about it, they just asked if we could just...voice our opinion, yes or no."'''

And the board did just that, offering their opinion that they are in favor of consolidating the schools.

No official motion was or will be taken quite yet, as the respective school boards must still file petitions to get the question on an election ballot next year.
