New Apartment Complex Proposed for Carl Sandburg College
Carl Sandburg College is set to get its first dedicated student housing, and it will be located in the spot of a former longtime hotel.

Bettendorf, Iowa-based Oxbow dDevelopment says it is proposing a five-million dollar complex with three apartment buildings and a clubhouse on the site of the former Regency Motel at Henderson Street and Tom Wilson Boulevard.

If approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council, construction is expected to begin soon and be ready to open for next fall's semester.

In a letter obtained by WGIL, Carl Sandburg College president Lori Sundberg says she's supporting the project, in part because housing for students is very limited. The college had been working with a private developer on a similar matter.

The complex, Oxbow officials say, will have a security system, 70 rooms with 144 beds, a fitness center, and tanning facilities, along with the free-standing clubhouse.

Oxbow will be working with Indiana-based Mecca Companies on the project -- a firm they say has extensive student housing experience in the Midwest.

The former Regency was torn down earlier this year after years of decay.
