Emanuel Favors Settling Police Torture Lawsuits
CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the city is working toward settling a series of civil lawsuits filed over allegations of police torture.

Emanuel tells the Chicago Sun-Times for a story published Tuesday that ``settlement is a possibility'' in the outstanding lawsuits.

At least six lawsuits are pending that accuse former Chicago Police Lt. Jon Burge or his officers of torturing suspects into giving confessions from the 1970s to the 1990s.

Burge was convicted last year of lying about whether he'd ever seen or participated in torture. He's serving a 4{-year sentence in federal prison.

Burge-related cases have cost the city an estimated $43 million. The lawsuits typically name Burge, the city and the police department, among others, and taxpayers are funding the defense.
