Teachers Union Still Displeased with District 205
The Galesburg School District starts classes Tuesday, and teachers say they'll be there, but for how long remains the big question.

The contract between the Galesburg Education Association and District 205 ends Friday, and the GEA says what would be only the fifth meeting between the two sides is scheduled for that day.

The union says the sides had agreed to seven different meeting dates since March, but two of those were cancelled.

The union says in a statement issued Friday but received Monday that they will work under the terms of the soon-to-be expired contract for a period of time so classes and extra-curricular activities start on time, but they won't do it forever.

They say with problems and changes related to education at both the state and federal levels, it's a critical time.

The union says as was pointed out at this month's board meeting, test scores are tops while the district is near the bottom in per-pupil spending, but they also have said they do not believe money is the issue here.
