City Council Pleased with Remapping
The Galesburg City Council didn't have much of a problem anymore with the proposed new ward and precinct maps.

The maps had to be redrawn due to the Census, and has new boundaries for wards and 26 precincts instead of 31 based on population changes. They were redrawn once and tabled by the council in May, until differences can be worked out.

The City of Galesburg's G-I-S analyst Jim Cueno says he tried to make the new map as fair as possible.

"I started with 7 blocks that had to be in each ward, the block you lived in," he says. "And then expanded out from that block to try and get the populations as even as possible, keeping in mind that precints can't cross legislative boundaries or county board lines."

That's where some of the concerns remained with aldermen, but Cueno says there wasn't much he could do. City Election Commission chair Bill Butts says it's not perfect, and he preferred the first map, but this is as good as it can get.

Aldermen will vote on the proposal during their meeting the day after Labor Day.
