Test Scores Still a Concern in Monmouth-Roseville
The Monmouth-Roseville School District says it's doing the best it can giving students the best education it can, even if federal No Child Left Behind standards say it's not.

A number of District-238's schools have deficiencies according to preliminary figures. Harding Primary School, for example, is in a federal "choice" status, meaning the district has to make available options for parents of that school to send their kids somewhere else.

Monmouth-Roseville Junior High did not make Adequate Yearly Progress in math, while the high school is in "safe harbor" status.

School Board member Mary Kelly, Harding principal Deb Martin, and Superintendent Paul Woehlke believe the district is just fine, and places some of the blame on the state.

"We've got our own accountability, the state is messed up anyway and let's proceed on what we have," Kelly says. "Exactly, we're going to keep focusing on our goals and our accountability," Woehlke says. Martin added, "Bottom line, the common core here, is that we are working toward the common core, that we are going to up and increase our curriculum at all levels."

Martin referred to the common core standards that must now be implemented, essentially giving a roadmap of what a group of states believes students should learn in class.

All schools are supposed to be meet all the standards of N-C-L-B later this decade, but officials believe that's next to impossible.
