U of I Sets Smoothie Record
(IRN) -- The University of Illinois has broken the world record for the largest smoothie.

The strawberry smoothie came in at 330 gallons, beating the previous record of 264 gallons set by Dairy Farmers of Canada in July 2010.

The project was undertaken by University Housing Dining Services, with both professional chefs and student workers contributing. The mixing was done in the back of a refrigerated truck parked on the west side of the school's football stadium, Memorial Stadium. The finished product was then transported to a 350 gallon jug also located on the west side of the stadium. Mixing occurred between the hours of 8:30 AM and 12:30 PM Friday.

The smoothie was served to University of Illinois freshman and transfer students, who were leaving new student convocation at the nearby Assembly Hall and entering the stadium for a post-convocation event. Around 8000 students were served.

The smoothie included 690 pounds of strawberries, 1,035 pounds of yogurt, and 99 gallons of pineapple juice. Prairie Farms donated 250 pounds of the 1035 pounds of yogurt. The smoothie had 745,710 calories, 19,042 grams of protein, 4,768 grams of fat, and 160,898 grams of carbohydrates. Each 4 ounce serving contained 67 calories.
