Efforts to Legalize Drug Recycling Stalled in IL
CHICAGO (AP) -- When Laura Redman's mother died after becoming bedridden by Lou Gehrig's disease, Redman was left with vials of unused medication but nowhere for it to go.

Redman tells the Chicago Tribune for a story published in Saturday's editions that it's a sin to see the 13 vials of hundreds of pills go to waste.

But efforts to allow Redman and others to recycle unused prescription meds have stalled in Illinois.

Drug manufacturers want protections against lawsuits once the drugs are out of their hands. And trial lawyers want patients and their families to have some recourse if something with the drugs goes awry.

State Rep. Patricia Bellock, a chief sponsor of the medication recycling legislation, says she hopes to see it called for a vote in the fall.
