Former Congressman Criticizes Man Who Replaced Him
A one-time Congressman may not be seeking his seat again any time soon, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have strong opinions about the man who beat him in November to retain the seat.

Galesburg native and Rock Island resident Phil Hare spoke to party faithful Thursday at the Knox County Democratic Party's annual ice cream social at Lincoln Park.

Hare, who was defeated by Colona Republican Bobby Schilling, tells WGIL he thinks voters might not be so happy with Schilling right now.

"We've got to get this seat back," Hare said. "I'm very disappointed in the direction that Schilling has taken this [district]. I think we will get [the 17th Congressional District seat] back, and not just because it's a new district [after remapping], I think people now see what they got. And, there's some buyer's remorse out there, I think."

Hare cites things like what he called "really, really bad Medicare cuts" that he claims are taking the country down the wrong path.

Several people looking to replace Schilling also were in attendance at the ice cream social: State Senator Dave Koelher of Peoria, and former newspaper reporter Cheri Bustos.

Schilling, meanwhile, toured the Pioneer Hybrids plant in Woodhull Thursday according to his Facebook page -- a vist the media wasn't made aware of in advance.
