ADM to Close Galesburg Plant
FIRST REPORTED 7:59pm 8/22/11, UPDATED 6:00am 8/23/11 A major agricultural player is ending it's ties to the city of Galesburg.

A statement made by Decatur-based ADM Monday night confirmed that its soybean processing facility in Galesburg will be closing its location, effective immediately.

ADM declined WGIL's interview request, but Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza says he expects more of a formal explanation.

"For us, any time that there is any type of closure or job loss, not only in Galesburg, but actually in the commuting distance to Galesburg, is one less opportunity for our residents," Garza said. "We understand that we have a number of people who work in the Quad Cities as well as Galesburg. So it isn't just in our own backyard it impacts us, but it could be communities that are a half-hour away."

Garza says he wants to meet with ADM executives as soon as possible to get a more formal explanation as to why they're closing the plant, and to see if there's any way they can stay.

31 jobs will be lost in Galesburg. ADM said in a statement it intends to offer severance packages and other job assistance to those losing their jobs.

ADM expects a number of those jobs to be transferable to a different facility, that number is still unknown.

The ADM plant in Galesburg was in a seasonal closure phase, but workers were still working through the closure. The future of the current building, located next to the former Butler Manufacturing facility, is unclear.
