Barge Worker Rescued From Mississippi River Island
BUFFALO, Iowa (AP) -- A river barge worker who fell into the Mississippi River near Buffalo has been rescued from an island downriver.

Authorities say the man went overboard early Monday morning about a mile east of Buffalo Beach in southeast Iowa.

Searchers eventually found him a few miles downstream. He'd been wearing a life jacket, so he floated with the current until it delivered him to an island on the Illinois side. The island was across from the boat ramp at Montpelier, Iowa.

Crew members aboard a Buffalo Fire Department boat spotted the man and picked him up a little before noon.

He complained of back pain, so an ambulance took him to a Davenport hospital.

His name has not been released. He works for Alter Barge.
