State Taking Hard Stance On Fraudulent ID's
A task force implemented by the secretary of state two years ago is continuing to develop their enforcement and prevention in dealing with fraudulent identification.

The Safe ID Task Force began after a sting ended Chinese immigrants buying fake ID's in Chicago.

Since then the task force's head, Inspector General Jim Burns, says college students have been involved in illegal rings concerning fakes, prompting stricter penalties.

"Now the law says that students can be susceptible to a $500 dollar fine, 50 hours of community service, and even more done year suspension of your license. So if you were in college and needed a license or car to drive, you get pinched with a bad driver's license you are going to lose your license."

Burns says a case in April of this year involved a Chinese-based Internet site distributing fraudulent ID's to college students. He says over a dozen students, mostly from Illinois State and Depaul, were charged with attempted unlawful possession of a fraudulent identification card.

Burns tells WGIL there are 12 mechanisms to an Illinois Driver's License or State ID card that can be used to ensure a card is fraud proof.
