NIU Approves Budget, Still Owed State Money
DEKALB, Ill. (AP) -- Northern Illinois University's $436 million internal budget has been approved even though the state owes the DeKalb school about $42 million in late payments.

The Daily Chronicle reports that the school's board of trustees approved the fiscal year 2012 budget on Thursday. Trustees approved the budget with the expectation that the state would pay the late money by an extended deadline of Dec. 31.

NIU President John Peters says the university is ``putting our trust in the state of Illinois to honor its obligations.'' He calls the situation a ``dilemma.''

The budget includes a capital request for residence hall renovations and a new technology center. It takes into account 1.15 percent less in anticipated revenues compared with the previous year.
