Knox County Board Approves Child Advocacy Help
Defenders in child advocacy cases will now be paying more per case.

A new resolution approved by the Knox County Board will charge more per case depending on the severity for the county's Child Advocacy Center.

Assistant State's Attorney Erik Gibson explained to the board Wednesday night the new pricing structure resembles what Warren County already has in place, while already using the Knox C.A.C.

"This is just requiring more court cost out of each defendant, it's not anything that comes out of a budget or anything," Gibson says. "But it's an attempt to collect more from the defendant in order to further fund the Knox County Child Advocacy Center, which obviously is a non for profit. So they can't go out and charge people for interviews or anything of that sort."

The C.A.C handles forensic interviewing of children aged 3 to 17 involving abuse, harassment, or other disputes children may endure in the household.

The board's approval will allow the C.A.C. to charge up to $30 dollars for felony cases, $20 dollars for misdemeanor, and $10 dollars for less serious, business matters. Previously each case was $5 dollars.

Gibson tells WGIL he hopes the jump in case fees will encourage more positive funding.
