Local Volunteer Helping Hurricane Efforts
As Hurricane Irene weakens, national support strengthens. The Western Illinois Red Cross in Galesburg is doing their part by sending a disaster volunteer to Massachusetts early Tuesday morning.

Administrative Assistant with the Red Cross in Galesburg Anne Sienkewicz tells WGIL her name is Pat Johnson. Sienkewicz says Johnson is experienced in shelter and mass feeding, and also provided volunteer efforts in Joplin Missouri.

"She'll be working with a team of Red Cross volunteers to run the shelter," she says. "There are many shelters up and down the east coast right now because of Irene, and Red Cross volunteers run them."

Sienkewicz says some disaster communities organize their own shelters but the Red Cross prides themselves on sheltering and will help all who are in need.

The WIRC's Johnson will be a part of the many Red Cross organizations from around the country helping to turn church halls or gymnasiums into shelters.

Sienkewicz says Johnson along with other Red Cross volunteers will aid those in need by making sure they are safe and conditions are healthy
