Attempted Robbery With Toy Gun, But Real Ammo
Galesburg police have no suspects in an early Tuesday morning attempted armed robbery at the Circle K gas station on East Main Street.

Police say a man displayed what was believed to be a black handgun to the clerk working the counter at 2:14 AM Tuesday. They say the man, who was wearing a latex glove on his right hand, told the clerk "this is a hold up, put the money in the bag."

It was after the clerk filled the brown paper sack with money from the register that police records indicate the clerk noticed the gun pointing at him was a toy gun.

Police say the clerk recognized the barrel to be similar to that of a water gun with a white plastic hole. Records show that the clerk then told the suspect he knew the gun was fake, and pulled the sack of cash back towards him.

The suspect then departed out of the Circle K and proceeded westbound on Main. According to police the bottom of the brown paper sack contained real ammunition. Surveillance video showed the entire exchange to take less than a minute.

Galesburg police searched the scene and a K-9 Unit was also called in, but with negative results.

The suspect was last seen wearing a white short sleeve tee shirt over a long sleeve grey tee, with black pants, striped white down the sides. The suspect was also wearing white shoes.

If you have any further information regarding the attempted crime please contact Galesburg Police or the Galesburg area Crimestoppers.
