Soangetaha Bridge Part of 2012 Streets Program in Galesburg
Some bridge work is a part of the proposed 2012 street repair program for the City of Galesburg, but at least one alderman took issue with it.

Specifically, one of the areas of concern is the bridge that takes residents to the area of Soangetaha Country Club. Technically, $250,000 is expected to be spent on the bridge that Carl admitted isn't the city's responsibility since it's over Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks.

But Carl told Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming since it's the only access to the homes in that area, the city feels like it has to do something, which is why it's trying not to use city money to do most of the repairs.

"We've secured 60 percent of the funding through the Illinois Commerce Commission for the bridge," Carl said. "We're requesting that Burlington Northern contribute at least 20 percent of that, and that would leave the city with the remaining 20 percent."

Carl says he's not so sure the railroad sees the bridge the same way the city does. Rusting on some of the spans of the bridge has occurred, and Carl says they need to be repaired, if for no other reason than it's the only access for both police and fire.

Only $1.3 million is being budgeted for street work this year, even though Carl says in a perfect world, over $7.5 million is needed.
