Local Leaders Get Together to Talk Amtrak
FIRST REPORTED 3:00pm 8/13/12 A group of local political leaders got together in Galesburg to talk about how they can use and help Amtrak better, and came out being official.

"We had discussions on different things we could do, then we had a vote to officially form...a coalition, where we will work together at future meetings. We're looking at, probably, quarterly meetings."

State Representative Don Moffitt, after a meeting Monday afternoon in Galesburg involving the mayors of Galesburg, Kewanee, Macomb, and Quincy, along with officials from Princeton, other state lawmakers, and Congressmen Bobby Schilling.

Macomb State Representative Norine Hammond says while the group is connected by the Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg routes on Amtrak, they're also connected in other ways.

"We want to work together, not just as a transportation hub, but as a tourism, economic development and business opportunities [hub]," Hammond said. "It's about using Amtrak as a means to invest in our chambers of commerce, invest in our convention and visitors bureaus."

And, Hammond said, local colleges. Local leaders suggested that usage of the train among college students has risen considerably, so they might be able to be used to help further promote Amtrak.
