Evaluation Tool Not Yet in Place for D. 205 Teachers
The Galesburg School District is being mandated to start using a new tool to evaluate the district's teachers, but they won't do so yet.

The District-205 board Monday night was to vote on the new tool, but learned they can't yet, because of issues the Galesburg Education Association has with the evaluation plan, even though a committee made up of administrators and union teachers have been crafting the plan.

District-205 Human Resources Director Diane Van Hootegem says even though the GEA has concerns about it for now, she likes the plan.

"I'm extremely proud of the work the joint committee has done," Van Hootegem said. "They've come up with a very comprehensive plan that meets the guidelines that we have been informed by the state we need to meet, as well as something that's very usable and will continue to keep us on the right track and doing a great job."

The district has a waiver which expires next year, allowing them to use the evaluation model they've been using.

Among the concerns with the new model, the GEA says there are issues that have to be worked into the teachers' collective bargaining agreement, and there's no appeal process.

The School Board Monday night did approve construction drawings for renovations planned for Steele Elementary School under the Master Facilities Plan, and they okayed the addition of four Peoria teams to the Western Big 6 Conference for football only.
