Tourism Council to Honor Former Leader
FIRST REPORTED 3pm 8/14/12 A former Galesburg resident who led the Galesburg-Area Convention and Visitors Bureau for the better part of a decade will be honored in the way that Knox County Tourism Council members think she'd be want to be remembered.

The Tourism Council Tuesday okayed placing a special plaque on a boulder in front of the flag pole outside the Galesburg Welcome Center to honor Diane Bruening.

Bruening passed away last month following a massive stroke, at the age of 61.

CVB employee Jerry Wood says it's the sort of thing Bruening would feel good about.

"She always wanted to put something on there -- some kind of plaque on there," Wood said. "That would be a perfect spot. The year we opened, and the memorial to Diane. She always talked about putting some kind of something on that big rock out there, that flag pole."

The woman who succeeded Bruening, Judy Guenseth, says a special dedication ceremony will be held when the plaque is made available.

Mayor Sal Garza says something else Bruening wanted for the Welcome Center will be pushed faster now in her honor: some sort of electronic sign to be visible from East Main Street.
