City Council Approves Environmental Grant
Some more state grant money is coming to the City of Galesburg in order to move closer to possibly cleaning up a piece of land that has contamination.

The City Council recently approved a grant agreement with the state EPA that will provide $127,000, or, about 70-percent of the costs of work to be done at the former Knox Laundry site near downtown.

City Manager Todd Thompson says the city would like to have that site cleaned up once and for all, but can't just yet.

"To date, phase one environmental analysis and other investigatory work has occurred," Thompson said. "But in order to get funding for the actual clean-up, there's additional analysis and evaluation that's needed. This project will assist with the determining the clean-up objectives for the site."

Mayor Sal Garza says the city will look for some sort of developer that may want the land, but that can't happen until the site can be cleaned up.

But, city officials say the city is a long way from formal clean-up just yet.
