Differences of Opinion on Lombard Construction
The man in charge of the Galesburg School District's Master Facilities Plan says there was never anything to worry about -- or even rumor about.

At a meeting involving a committee of the Galesburg Public Library Board Wednesday, District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill said there was what he called a nasty rumor going around that Lombard Middle School wasn't going to open in time Thursday because of all the construction work going on there.

Cahill says that's not a rumor that makes him happy.

"I don't know who's spreading [the rumor]. Actually, I do know who's spreading it: mischief-makers," Cahill said. "We need to demonstrate that it just ain't the case."

Cahill says he believes he can easily prove that Lombard was ready to open.

"The Health Department approved the use of the kitchen for operation for the first day of school," Cahill said. "The [Knox County Regional Office of Education] has approved occupancy of the building."

There is still some work being done inside parts of Lombard -- for example, a new library isn't quite ready. But it wasn't planned to be anyway, Cahill says.

The Galesburg Education Association posted pictures to their Facebook they claim make the school unsafe.

Union president Russ Ullrich told WGIL by e-mail Wednesday there was still construction equipment in place then, and that he guessed they'd see if the building was ready to go Thursday.
