Weather Affects Local Apple Orchard
Corn and soybeans have clearly been adversely affected by the weather of the last six months, but other crops were adversely affected earlier rather than later.

Chief among them may be what put Tanner's Orchard near Peoria in business. Craig Tanner says he wasn't all that concerned at first when apples started blooming earlier than normal because of the mild spring.

But Tanner tells WGIL sure enough, it got bad real quick.

"In April, right on cue, we had some cold weather," Tanner said. "At the stage the apples were in, [a temperature of] 28 degrees, I would lose 10 percent of the crop. At 25 degrees, I would lose 90 percent of the crop. I recorded temperatures of 23 degrees."

Tanner says only a few apples survived, but not many, so in order to keep the orchard operating, he says apples have to be trucked in from other areas.

But all in all, Tanner says the orchard will end up being okay. Tanner's Orchard is celebrating its 65th year of operation this year, and is open six-days a week for now, expanding to seven days in September and October.
