Mayor to Formally Introduce Pot Ordinance Veto
Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza could further explain himself Monday night regarding the veto of an ordinance passed a few weeks ago.

Garza will formally present his veto to the Council, and he may explain why he did it. Aldermen passed on a four-to-three vote an ordinance allowing for an administrative ticket to be issued instead of state charges for possessing under two-and-a-half grams of marijuana.

Garza told WGIL in a recent interview he doesn't think the ordinance goes far enough, and wants to add some alternatives for youth offenders.

"There would be no greater opportunity to connect the young violators with something that could be constructive, to help them not repeat again in terms of this type of violation," Garza said.

Garza wants to implement a program similar to the "Insight" program used for drug intervention in the Abingdon School District.

Seventh Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin helped backed the cannabis ordinance, and says there are already plenty of options for youth offenders without having to write them into the ordinance.

The Galesburg City Council Monday will also receive a donation from the Limited Rods of Western Illinois organization that will go toward renovations planned for the Lincoln Park Gazebo, when they meet at 6:30pm at City Hall, following a five o'clock closed session and a 6:15pm Public Hearing.
