GREDA to Host Meeting for Knoxville on Grocery Stores
The city of Knoxville is getting some help to try and figure out what to do after it rejected a request that could have led to the building and opening of a new grocery store in town.

The Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association is hosting a meeting Tuesday night at the Hurd-Hendricks Community Room in Knoxville, discussing specifically food co-ops and alternative grocery store ownership.

The city has been without a grocery store for several years after the IGA chain store closed down a few years ago, and GREDA president Tom Schmidt tells the WGIL Morning News that's sort of the way of the land these days.

"There is a trend that is impacting the smaller grocery stores across this country," Schmidt said. "Many of us probably grew up being familiar with local corner pharmacies as well, for instance, and you don't see that anymore. I think some of the same economic repercussions are taking place in the food industry, too."

Schmidt says part of the purpose will be to determine if there's even enough interest in Knoxville and the surrounding area for a food cooperative, defined as a type of grocery store owned typically by members and not corporations.

The meeting starts at six o'clock Tuesday and is open to the public.
