Disagreements Continue at Abingdon City Council Meeting
The residents of Abingdon still have issues with how Mayor Roger Stegall runs city government.

Residents spoke at length at Monday night's City Council meeting on a number of issues, but several had to do with Stegall's operation of the city.

One of them, Kirt DeJaynes, says he doesn't understand how Stegall can appoint Terry Allen to the Second Ward Alderman seat when others including him wanted the seat.

"I also stood up here months before that, and said I would be interested in that Alderman position, and was never contacted, never interviewed, never even given a chance to have that seat," DeJaynes said. "[I'd] just like some answers, sir."

Stegall said he appointed Allen to the seat on a temporary basis after aldermen rejected it twice. He says DeJaynes, Allen, and two others were considered for the vacancy left when Dianna Hitchler resigned.

DeJaynes also wondered if aldermen could vote on every item discussed at meetings, even if they're not on the agenda. The answer, according to City attorney Jack Ball, is no, because that would be in violation of the state's Open Meetings Act.

The city council did okay Police Chief Jerry Roberts promoting a part-time officer to full-time, and two auxiliary officers to part-time status.
