Commission rejects high tunnel changes
FIRST REPORTED 3:00pm 8/24/12 The Galesburg Planning and Zoning Commission this week rejected further changes that would no longer require high-tunnel growing structures as only an accessory structure on a residential property, but would also allow them as a primary structure.

The request came at the result of Sixth Ward Alderman Wayne Allen, after learning that Doctor Peter Hauslein built a structure on a vacant lot in the 900 block of Locust Street.

Commission Chairperson John Spittel wasn't happy with that, saying it would be spot zoning if approved.

"We have a good ordinance that we put forth, and it was based on accommodating home based business, and now we have someone who has not complied and we have an alderman that requests for spot zoning and the commercialization, potential commercialization, of all residential property in the City of Galesburg."

Spittel made reference to another request earlier in the meeting regarding a zoning change on Lincoln Street.

The request will still be before the Galesburg City Council in September, which could go against the Planning and Zoning Commission request and allow it anyway.
