BREAKING NEWS: Two Fires Overnight in Galesburg
UPDATED 7:45am 8/28/12 Galesburg Firefighters are still investigating the cause of two fires early Tuesday -- one almost right after the other, though they're not believed to be connected.

Fire Chief Tom Simkins says the first fire was reported around 12:30am Tuesday at the Spee Dee Delivery Service on Log City Trail. He says the building was fully engulfed in flames at the time of the call, so crews spent the next several hours in a defensive stance putting the blaze out.

Simkins tells the WGIL Morning News the cause of that fire isn't certain, and no one is hurt.

"There was one vehicle that sat next to the building -- a personal vehicle -- that we were kind of worried about," Simkins said. "We weren't able to track the gentleman down. He was one of the route drivers, we believe. We've since located him."

A fleet of vehicles among other items in the metal structure were a total loss.

As crews wrapped up there, a fire to an apartment building in the three hundred block of North Cherry was called in around 4am Tuesday.

Simkins says that fire, which he believes started in an attic and may have been related to an attic fan, was able to be put out quickly, though firefighters spent several hours at the scene.

Five people in the apartments were able to escape unharmed. Simkins says a sixth wasn't home.
