State Senate Candidate Says No to Pension If Elected
A candidate for a State Senate District that will cover part of Galesburg after the November election says he won't take the state legislators pension if elected.

Current Adams County Clerk Randy Frese campaigned in Galesburg and around this part of the new 47th District Tuesday. In Galesburg, he stopped at the Knox County Courthouse.

Frese tells WGIL he won't take the pension, because he believes in at least a small way, it will help put an end to the state's current pension crisis, which has about 85 billion dollars in unfunded liability.

"I think that for someone to sit at the table and negotiate on behalf of the taxpayers, they should lead by example, and lead from the front," Frese said. "By foregoing any benefits, I can there comfortably sit at that table and negotiate on behalf of the taxpayers, for the taxpayers of the State of Illinois."

Frese places most of the blame on top lawmakers, saying that the General Assembly needs to stand up to them in order to get pension reform to happen.

Frese says he's opposed to ideas like passing the pension funding burden on to local school districts.

Frese faces Democratic incumbent John Sullivan of Rushville, who's currently recovering from cancer surgery.
