Knoxville Schools to Lay Fiber Optic Lines
The Knoxville School Board approved an item Monday night that technically could be considered the first step toward building a new high school.

The District-202 Board at a special meeting Monday night approved a $140,000 bid that will allow for the installation of a new fiber-optic line connecting the three schools in the district along with the administrative office.

Superintendent Steven Wilder tells WGIL the fiber optic line will be a part of the new high school when it's built, but can greatly help the district now.

"Our district data center is located in the High School currently, and will be in the new building," Wilder said. "This is a little bit of advance work that we were able to start on right away. We'll lay fiber optic cable that will connect the high school to each of the buildings in our district, and provide us a very reliable, high speed network connection that will last for the foreseeable future."

Wilder says the work is expected to start in a couple weeks and is to be complete in November.

The board also continued discussions with a company that is interested in being the owners representative on the new high school construction project, and Wilder says the board okayed him continuing negotiations toward the potential approval of a formal deal.
