Moffitt Reacts to Gambling Veto
A local lawmaker says he thought Governor Pat Quinn might do something slightly different with gambling expansion legislation lawmakers passed during their spring session.

Quinn Tuesday outright vetoed the legislation that would have allowed for several new riverboat casinos in the state, slot machines at horse tracks, and a land-based casino in Chicago.

State Representative Don Moffitt tells the WGIL Morning news he thought Quinn might change the legislation through and amendatory veto, not nix it.

"[I thought he would] make those changes, that would increase the regulation, the policing, the enforcement," Moffitt said, "to make sure that it was kept clean, to make sure that as best as you can that it would not be infiltrated by underworld elements, et cetera."

Quinn expressed concerns about a lack of regulatory oversight in the bill, and the possibility that gambling interests could still make campaign contributions.

Moffitt says the proponents of expansion are already gearing up for a possible override of the veto. He says he supported the measure in the house because of agriculture programs that would be funded as part of the legislation.
