New Building to Replace One Destroyed by Fire
FIRST REPORTED 5:30am 8/6/12 A building that was destroyed by fire at a local business several months ago will be replaced.

That's partly because the Galesburg Planning and Zoning Commission recently okayed a variance from the city's development ordinance, so that a gravel driveway can be construction in support of a new lumber building at People's Do-It Center in Galesburg.

The old building was destroyed in a blaze over three months ago.

City Community Development Director Roy Parkin says there shouldn't be any problems with use of the building, or with neighbors.

"The existing east and west sides of the building will be used for employees to access lumber storage areas, and customers will pick up materials in the parking lot," Parkin said. "Employees will bring bulk materials out of the building with a forklift. And although there is [sic] residential buildings located east of the People's Side along South Chambers Street, an existing storage building screens the residential properties from the gravel areas."

Normally, city ordinance requires the use of a paved driveway instead of a gravel one. Parkin says that should not cause any problems with fire trucks getting to the site -- one of the concerns commission members had before voting to approve the variance.
