City and Railroad Work on Land Deal
The City of Galesburg and the largest employer in the area are working on exchanging some land that officials hope will benefit both sides.

The Galesburg City Council Monday approved a two-year agreement for Burlington Northern Santa Fe to lease about a third-acre of land at Peck Park, that the railroad wants as it continues adding a third main line through the city.

But City Engineer Wayne Carl says the hope is to get some land in return in the future.

"Over the past several years, the city has had ongoing discussions with the railroad about acquiring a piece of property the railroad owns down at the Amtrak depot at Colton Park," Carl said. "The city is wanting to acquire a strip of property adjacent to the [railroad] tracks, comprising of .524 acres approximately. The purpose of that is to assist in the redevelopment of Colton Park."

But Carl says the land swap couldn't have been completed before the railroad upgrades, so that's why the lease agreement was signed.

Aldermen approved the lease agreement unanimously.
