Alderman Reacts to Possible Veto on Cannabis Ordinance
The alderman whose idea it was for the Galesburg City Council to vote on an ordinance designed to provide an alternate penalty for possession of small amounts of cannabis says he has a feeling the mayor might do something potentially unpopular with the measure.

7th Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin says he suspects Mayor Sal Garza might veto the ordinance making it a potential city ordinance violation for possession of up to two-and-a-half grams of cannabis when he announced Monday he was reserving the right to take action within the next five days -- something allowed for under statute.

But Karlin tells WGIL that doesn't mean he's no less disappointed in the matter.

"It's disappointing in the respect that we spent a lot of time on it, and it would end in a veto," Karlin said. "More importantly, this is an idea that was brought to me by a constituent of mine. I thought it was a good idea, got it to our city administration to draft up in the form of an ordinance, and was able to eventually get it considered by the City Council."

Karlin says since the measure passed Monday four-to-three, he doesn't believe he would have enough votes to override any veto.

Karlin says it's not a political issue, either, because he doesn't consider being on the City Council a political job.

Garza has so far not returned calls for an interview on the matter.
