Health Department Cuts Ribbon on Clinic
The Knox County Community Health Clinic is officially open for business.

The clinic, started by the Knox County Health Department, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday, in part for recognition of National Community Health Center Weel, but also because the clinic is now one of only about a dozen nationwide that have been declared a federally-qualified health center.

Knox County Health Department Administrator Heidi Britton says this is something she's been working on since she and her family moved here three years ago.

"My interview was a lot of questions from the Board of Health on 'We really want to do this FQHC. Do you think you can get it done?' With the help of many, many community partners, we did get it done," Britton said. "We finally got our notification on the longest day of the year (June 20). Besides myself and the boards, we couldn't be more ecstatic."

Britton also praised the governance board that had to be formed in connection with the clnic being opened. She says they're able to do a lot of work monthly, and very effectively.

The federally-qualified status means anyone can be served by the clinic -- not just Knox County residents.
