Firefighters Give Downtown Buildings the Once-Over
The Galesburg Fire Department is looking into how it can do a better job saving neighboring buildings downtown when one of them is on fire.

Fire fighters are going from building to building downtown looking at things like firewalls inbetween buildings, the distance between buildings and other things, in order to better figure out how to fight fires in them.

Fire Captain Dan Foley tells the WGIL Morning News they were spurred by the fire two months ago at the former Hawkinson Manufacturing Building downtown.

"We had another major building just to the east of that, that did not have damage because there's separation between the two buildings," Foley said. "It's kind of appropriate during his light duty phase for Kevin -- he's going to work to help us know better downtown, where and what the separations are between the buildings."

The work will be done for now by the firefighter injured in the Hawkinson Manufacturing fire: Kevin Sullivan.

He says he's feeling much better, and will soon return to full-time duty after completing some rehab.
