Abingdon Schools Want Fees Paid Up
The Abingdon School District needs your money if you're a student or the parent of one.

Superintendent David Black told the District-217 School Board Wednesday night there is what he might call a substantial list of unpaid student fees for both academics and athletics, with the biggest concentration of those being at the high school level, but also covering the elementary and middle schools.

Black says he's been trying to figure out what to do about the matter, and at one point considered turning the bills over to a collection agency.

"I was very much against that because, quite frankly, I'm not thrilled with collections agencies or the people that work for them," Black said. "Then, I started thinking more about the different options that were available. It seems like every one of them involves keeping the kid from doing something; it involves punishing the kid, for what most of the time is a problem that didn't originate from the kid."

Black says right now, there isn't much the district can do, though it told members of the senior class they couldn't take part in commencement exercises until their fees were paid. And Black says that worked.

Black is researching the alternatives more for next month's meeting.
