Moffitt: Historic Sites Funding to be Taken Up by House
A local lawmaker says there's a pretty good chance historic sites around the state may be one step closer to a reprieve after a two-day session that starts Wednesday.

The Illinois House will be in session Wednesday and Thursday, where Gilson Republican State Representative Don Moffitt says his bill to help restore funding the Governor cut to historic sites around the state, including Bishop Hill in Henry County, and the Carl Sandburg Birthplace in Galesburg.

Moffitt tells WGIL, assuming the funding is restored by the House, the question becomes whether or not the Illinois Senate will call a session to vote on it. "I think there is a chance, because members of the Senate are hearing these same concerns, these same comments, these same calls, from constituents to try to keep these sites open," Moffitt said. "I think there is a reasonable chance that the Senate would come back in, if the House does, in fact, approves a measure to restore this funding."

Lawmakers are also scheduled to again take up a capital spending bill and the proposed state lottery lease to pay for it, but thinks the historic sites funding will garner most of the attention.

Either way, Moffitt says there's, in his words, better than a 50/50 chance something will be passed out of this latest session.

Three sites in Bishop Hill, and the Sandburg birthplace, are scheduled to close October first, except for special evens.
