House Overwhelmingly Turns Down Gov's Ethics Reforms
Saying it's time to end the "sideshows" over pay-to-play politics in Illinois, the sponsor of a House ethics bill led an override Wednesday. State Rep. John Fritchey (D-Chicago) says the ethics debate has seen more hurdles than the Beijing Olympics. He said if lawmakers want to discuss Gov Rod Blagojevich's ideas in an amendatory veto message, they can do so later.

The governor took a bill which addressed campaign contributions by those doing business with the state and added provisions regarding the way the General Assembly accepts pay raises and banning many government employees from serving in the General Assembly.

The House overrode the amendatory veto to H.N. 824 110-3. State Reps. Anazette Collins (D-Chicago), Kurt Granberg (D-Carlyle) and Jay Hoffman (D-Collinsville) voted no.
