House OK's Fund Sweeps for Historic Sites Funding
The restoration of funding for the state's historic sites, Department of Natural Resources facilities, and to social service agencies in the state almost came at the expense of some other state funds that a local lawmaker helped create.

The Illinois House Wednesday passed a measure that would restore that funding, but would do it through something the Governor has done in the past: sweeping $200 million from special purpose funds.

74th District State Representative Don Moffitt says, however, a couple funds near and dear to him will not be targeted. "It included sweeping or taking the balance in the Fire Prevention Fund, and in the Fire Truck Loan Program," Moffitt said. "It was a total of $8 million, and of course, that would have been very detrimental to the Fire Service. After a long discussion in committee, and working with a number of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, we're able to get that removed."

Moffitt says fire safety and money for training firefighters could be just as important as having state historic sites like Bishop Hill and the Carl Sandburg birthplace open, so he says he's glad those funds won't be swept.

He says the issue of historic sites funding isn't over yet, since the Senate would still have to act and then the Governor.

Moffitt said earlier this week he thought there would be a good chance the Senate would call a special session to take up the funding.
