Groups Question Blago's Budget Cuts
Several groups are decrying Governor Rod Blagojevich's budget cuts as illogical and as potentially costing the state some federal funding.

Illinois Association of Hispanic State Employees president Carlos Charneco says the governor's budget cuts are causing layoffs, some of the layoffs will hit bi-lingual state workers, and non-English-speaking people could lose out. He says if a Spanish-speaking client needs help from a state agency, but can't get to a bi-lingual worker, it could lead to a discrimination complaint. Charneco also says federal funding is at risk. He said, "A condition that's required in order to continue receiving those federal funds is to provide language access. In other words, you have to make your services accessible to clients with limited English proficiency."

Groups that advocate for state parks and historical sites are also upset about the cuts, because they're leading to the October first closure of eleven state parks and 13 historic sites. Those groups say the governor's cutting what little state money these parks and sites receive, even though shuttering those parks and sites could lead to millions of dollars of lost tourism money from visitors to those areas. They say that just doesn't make sense.
