Knox College Starts New Academic Year; PICTURES AND AUDIO HERE
Knox College definitely knows how to ring in the start of a new school year.

The Knox College Choir under the direction of Laura Lane performing a work called "Double, Double, Toil and Trouble," based on Shakespeare's "MacBeth" to mark the beginning of the annual Opening Convocation at Knox College Thursday morning.

Knox College Board of Trustees Vice Chair for Advancement Charles Smith told the gathering that Wednesday marked the first time he's taken part in the annual welcome to campus known as the "Pumphandle" in awhile, and it reminded him of the first time he stood on campus 28-years ago.

He says something he learned then is good advice for today's students. "Freedom to flourish means freedom to fall flat on your face," Smith said. "I encourage those of you who are setting foot on campus for the first time, and those of you who are upperclass...the best way to experience Knox, I think, is to try things. This is a very safe place; it's like a trampoline. If you fall, you're going to bounce back up."

Smith told the students that if you don't fall and you don't fail every now and then, they need to stop and ask themselves what they're doing wrong, and wonder how they can push themselves more.

Several faculty, students, and staff members also received awards during the ceremony.
